The Purpose of Music Videos
In this essay I will be writing about the purpose of music videos and how they have emerged from the year 1941. The topics that I will discuss are: the promotion of both the artist and director, the strategies of the producer and why each artist is marketed differently, the income extending the artist and record labels, the various media outlets and finally the synergistic marketing- how other items help bring in income and promote the artist.
Promotion of artist and promotion of directors
When a band or artist has got promotion in their own video normally they will have either their name or logo on their instruments or on clothing items. With promotion of artist the idol Group μ's (Muse) from Japan the have an anime that has their songs in and then when they did live concert the voice actresses would be dressed the characters form the anime. The main way of promotion for the group is through the anime merchandise but the group have their own music outside of the way of the anime characters. With promoting the director they may have their names in the opening of the video or in the end credits. Michel Gondry has a unique style of video that he does. He is known for his videos that are stop motion animation but they are also quite arty.
Their song Susume ---> Tomorrow the live concert version and the anime version. With the concert song they sing the full song which is about 4 minutes long but with the anime one they have shortened it down to about 2 minutes. The two minute version is good for the anime as it helps promote the song and get that song more listened to and the full version is good for the live show as they can do the full song without it needing to be cut down.
This video Gondry directed for Bjork is arty and looks quite strange like her legs extending longer than they are. In the video the truck she drive has teeth under the front the of the car with objects and people crawling of it. Some of the background within look like realistic buildings but the rest of the scenery is arty . Bjork herself opens her mouth to show a set metal teeth that move one to be mechanical. Gondry style is quite are as most of his videos look similar in style but all have a different twist on the either being arty or stop motion animation. His style of of videos can help if the is a movie that needs both a sort of realistic look but with strange arty elements.
Producer's strategies how and why are artist marketed different
With a mainstream artist or band their producers know the best ways to promote them so they will have more advertisement and they could have a unique look to the artist/band to help sell them as well. With a more independent artist/bands it may be harder to advertise for them as they normally don't have a lot of money to promote themselves and they haven't really made a proper break into the music industry.
Black Veil Brides are a good example for a unique look. in their videos and when advertise the are shown to have war paint covering their faces and they all wear black items of clothing and they have their logo on most of their videos. Their look does resemble the band Kiss a bit in the older videos when they started out as they were an influence on the band. This look did slowly change to less war paint to more a natural look but still wearing all black.
Extending artist and record labels income
An artist or band should gain royalties when the radio plays their song for the use of the product. If there is a music video that goes along with the song every time it is watch they should gain royalties. Though it is a little hard to keep a track on how many times a song or videos is played. Depending on how popular or if the single sold well, there would be an estimated amount of money would be made for them.
TV channels and radio station will not really play many songs that won't get them money if the artist isn't well known or just bad. Way newer talent can try to make money is by going on TV shows like The Voice, X-Factor or talents show like Britain got talent. They can upload themselves to YouTube like Justin Bieber when he was younger.
Justin Bieber sing before his was famous. He kept going and then got found out and got signed to a record label.
One of his first song that got a video when he became a signed artist which this video have got 507,914,144 views on YouTube.
An independent artist/band have a harder time trying to promote themselves depending on their income and whether it is a secondary job.
Emma Blackery is a independent artist along side her being a vlogger. her vlogs consist of her talking about problems females have or do challenges or reacting to old videos she has done and old accounts from when she was younger. In some of her Vlog she would mention that she has or is doing a new song . She writes her own songs and sings them. Her influences are band such a Paramore and Busted. This is a play list of her music that she has produced and some covers that she done.
This is one of her vlog that she collaborates with the YouTuber Nerd Cubed and now does them roughly every week now with him.
The extension of various media outlets
Media outlets are a good way to promote music videos and songs to everyone but the can also be bad. Some media outlets are YouTube, Facebook, music channels on TV, the radio, i-tune, Twitter, Spotify and many more. The media outlet do help the promotion of the music videos or songs if they are new single it is by a famous artist or band. They do have a bit of a down side as they can get over populated loads of fan made videos for that song as well and newer artist work can get pushed to the bottom if it doesn't get many views and they are having to promote themselves it can be quite hard.
The song PPAP by Pikotaro got spread round quite a few media outlets and helped him get noticed and that now that video is siting at 52, 597,748 views. Now he brings out short videos of songs that he has sung. and he has a signature look which is his animal prints suit. The media outlet that I think the help promote it the most was Facebook as when it came out Facebook had the song every few post depending on who you like. In Japan,Tokyo sky tree for a month last year there was a cafe that had the song playing continuously and had merchandise with his animal print on and food themed around the song.

Synergistic marketing links to promotion and income
Synergistic Marking is where companies make a licensing deal with a main company such a Walt Disney making deals to allow other firms to use Micky Mouse on products to one help the companies sell merchandise and at the same time by promoting Disney. This still continues nowadays with all the films that have come out in recent years the most popular one that is use is the film frozen.
An example of synergistic marking is the group Aqours (Aqua) again like μ's (muse) they are advertised as their characters. The group have done a few live shows but most of their marketing has been through the singles getting sold and other merchandise being sold with the characters on them. There is also a game on mobile run by Klab games which is a rhythm game that have both μ's and Aqours music on. The songs for the game are shortened down to about 2 minutes. Artist also help drawing the characters and it helps promote the idols and helps show off their art and to help gain more attraction.

Why do you think music videos are so popular conclusion
Why I think music videos are so popular are because it helps the song tell a story and it gives that more of a meaning to a fan. If an artist/band a new song the are producing or making a video for it help when there is previews/ sneak peeks into what the video may look like that will again make the fan base exited for their new release and when it comes to concerts they sometime have the music video in the background to go along with the artist/ band singing. Music videos also help sell the artist/band and it may help them gain new fans.
I personally enjoy music videos because I don't get a songs lyrics and what they are talking about, I can watch the video listen to the music and then understand what they are singing.

Contractual letter
Thursday 16th June 2016
To whom it may concern,
I am writing about the Apprentice Digital Video
Production Producer advertisement. I am concerned that in your job offer you
have advertised for appilcants to create about a documentary on rape and showing it to high
school students. The job title advertised is a good place to start as a job and it isn't explicit job title but the topic you want the applicant to create on the topic of rape is quite explicit to show to that age group
of 11-16 year old pupils as they do not turn of age until the last year of high
school.
However, there are also legal
points I wish to bring to your attention. A contract is a written or a verbal
agreement, usually concerning employment. This is there for the new employee to show how many them how many hours they will be working and how much they will be paid . A confidentiality clause is when both
parties agree on what is said and they should not break the rules on what has
been said. This is put into place by the employer to help keep the clients and journalists sources quiet/ protected if they do not want them to be announced publicly.
The Equality Act is for people within the work
placement so they are not to discriminated against. It is illegal to employ
when you are discriminating. This is broken because you say you would like
Christian views which discriminates against other religious views. You said you
want people under the age of 30 that means you are limiting yourselves and you
are also being ageist and not conforming to the ideals of equality and
diversity. In fact, people over the age of 30 maybe able to that job better
that a 16 year old who is still studying for GCSEs. You are not being an equal
opportunities employer as you have stated what age and religion you are looking
for; these characteristics are protected under the Equality Act in chapter 1.
At this stage the people who have applied for this job do not have employees' right which could leave them open to legal action if there is something in this documentary which is breaking copyright law. People who have applied have not got health and safety training before hand and therefore may not be able to identify people who may be at risk of mental and physical abuse because of this production so the applicant will not be able to give appropriate help and guidance if said person has any complications.
Trade Union will only protect the employees'. A potential candidate at this point is not protected by the Trade Union. BECTU's is a Trade Union that will protect freelance people for a membership which is about £120. The candidate could be prosecuted for copyright as you have asked for a popular soundtrack which is protected by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and with the budget of £20 you have given that is not enough to buy the rights to use a certain song.
I understand that the codes of practice are not the
law but they are there for good working within a company to protect the citizen
and consumer. For filming you need to have the parent permission to film their
son/daughter as you have said to interview teenagers who could be a minor.
Do you really think you are promoting
good practice? If not, you may find there are legal issues later on.
The way you have represented the
individuals/group is wrong as you have said 'female victims and male offenders':
This suggest that only women are victims and male are offenders but this is
wrong as you can get female offenders and male victims this is one being
discriminative and offensive. If they have seen a documentary on rape and it is
only showing female victims, male victims may not come forward about being
raped. Also the fact you have only given one religious view which is
Christian which excludes any other religions it could be shown to.
The social concerns on this topic is if it is shown to high school student they may be immature about the topic of rape and then go and say they have watched a film on rape. Parents may get very annoyed about that. There are age restrictions to protect children for a reason. I will discuss the age ratings from the BBFC more when I get to the legal issues.
The way rape is portrayed by the media is that it is a
topic that is quite frequently covered. They almost always represent males as
aggressive and the show the female as helpless and weak. This topic may upset
and frighten female but also the male victims embarrassed to come forward and
report if they have been attacked.
The Ofcom broadcasting code of practice states that '1.1
Material that might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development
of people under eighteen must not be broadcast.' and 'broadcasters must take all reasonable steps
to protect people under eighteen' and consider 'the nature of the content'; Your advert that it will be' shown to children at high school' Ofcom
was set up to protect viewers and is stated legally because of Communications
Act (2003) and the Broadcasting Act (1990). Ofcom also states from the harm and
offence section that '2.2 Factual programmes or items or portrayals of
factual matters must not materially mislead the audience.' and ' 2.3 In applying
generally accepted standards broadcasters must ensure that material which may
cause offence is justified by the context'...including such material as, 'offensive language, violence, sex, sexual violence, humiliation, distress, violation of human
dignity, discriminatory treatment or language'.
You want to with your documentary include 'Re-enactments,
dramatization' This may be
acceptable in the context of the no means no campaign but with this you should
take the re-enactment up to a certain point.
The topic of rape may seem obscene to the
age range of the audience. This may mean a Lawyers would have to check the film
to see if it breaks The Obscene Publication Act (1959) which states that it is ' an offence to publish, whether for
gain or not, any content whose effect will tend to "deprave and
corrupt" those likely to read, see or hear the matter contained or
embodied in it. This could include images of extreme sexual activity such as bestiality,
necrophilia, rape or torture.' and if you go too far with what
you would like to include in your documentary it could be classed as por*#?aphy
which could mean you face a fine or prison.
With the age rating certification from the BBFC with the topic of rape and what sort of content you would like the applicant to do I would rate your documentary with the minimum age rating of a 15 because the 15 certificate rating say sexual activity may be portrayed but without 'strong detail' ... 'verbal references to sexual behaviour' unless 'justified by content' and the maximum of an 18. The 18 certification note that where 'sex material genuinely seeks to inform and educate' about 'safer sex and health explicit images of sexual activity may be permitted' but remember this is being presented to school children, therefore they are under 18 with what is defined from the BBFC.
You have asked candidates to create this documentary for the 'No Means No' campaign. Even though your company may want show to children round school, the video documentary itself is still owned by the candidate and the copyright remains as his or her intellectual property. If you show it to make money/try passing it off as your own before you hire them, you are breaking copyright laws as it is still owned by the candidate. With the song you have asked them to use a popular sound track which is owned by the artist music company/ the artist themselves, the candidate would be fined if they use the song.
In conclusion I would change your job advert to make it more friendly for people who are older than 30 so they have a chance, maybe up the age group to college and uni studentsto show it to as they should be more mature about that topic. If you don't want to change this job task for said application it can be taken into more serious matters such a court.
I hope you take your time to read this letter and take into action what has been said.
Yours Sincerely,
Miss F.A. Yaxley
