The Purpose of Music Videos

In this essay I will be writing about the purpose of music videos and how they have emerged from the year 1941. The topics that I will discuss are: the promotion of both the artist and director, the strategies of the producer and why each artist is marketed differently, the income extending the artist and record labels, the various media outlets and finally the synergistic marketing- how other items help bring in income and promote the artist.

Promotion of artist and promotion of directors
When a band or artist has got promotion in their own video normally they will have either their name or logo on their instruments or on clothing items. With promotion of artist the idol Group μ's (Muse) from Japan the have an anime that has their songs in and then when they did live concert the voice actresses would be dressed the characters form the anime. The main way of promotion for the group is through the anime merchandise but the group have their own music outside of the way of the anime characters.  With promoting the director they may have their names in the opening of the video or in the end credits. Michel Gondry has a unique style of video that he does.  He is known for his videos that are stop motion animation but they are also quite arty.

Their song Susume ---> Tomorrow the live concert version and the anime version. With the concert song they sing the full song  which is about 4 minutes long but with the anime one they have shortened it down to about 2 minutes. The two minute version is good for the anime as it helps promote the song and get that song more listened to and the full version is good for the live show as they can do the full song without it needing to be cut down.

This video Gondry directed for Bjork is arty and looks quite strange like her legs extending longer than they are. In the video the truck she drive has teeth under the front the of the car with objects and people crawling of it. Some of the background within look like realistic buildings but the rest of the scenery is arty . Bjork herself opens her mouth to show a set metal teeth that move one to be mechanical. Gondry style is quite are as most of his videos look similar in style but all have a different twist on the either being arty or stop motion animation. His style of  of videos can help if the is a movie that needs both a sort of realistic look but with strange arty elements.

Producer's strategies how and why are artist marketed different
With a mainstream artist or band their producers know the best ways to promote them so they will have more advertisement and they could have a unique look to the artist/band to help sell them as well. With a more independent artist/bands it may be harder to advertise for them as they normally don't have a lot of money to promote themselves and they haven't really made a proper break into the music industry.
Black Veil Brides are a good example for a unique look. in their videos and when advertise the are shown to have war paint covering their faces and they all wear black items of clothing and they have their logo on most of their videos. Their look does resemble the band Kiss a bit in the older videos when they started out as they were an influence on the band. This look did slowly change to less war paint to more a natural look but still wearing all black.

Extending artist and record labels income
An artist or band should gain royalties when the radio plays their song for the use of the product. If there is a music video that goes along with the song every time it is watch they should gain royalties. Though it is a little hard to keep a track on how many times a song or videos is played. Depending on how popular or if the single sold well, there would be an estimated amount of money would be made for them.
TV channels and radio station will not really play many songs that won't get them money if the artist isn't well known or just bad. Way newer talent can try to make money is by going on TV shows like The Voice, X-Factor or talents show like Britain got talent. They can upload themselves to YouTube like Justin Bieber when he was younger.

Justin Bieber sing before his was famous. He kept going and then got found out and got signed to a record label.

One of his first song that got a video when he became a signed artist which this video have got 507,914,144 views on YouTube.

An independent artist/band have a harder time trying to promote themselves depending on their income and  whether it is a secondary job.
Emma Blackery is a independent artist along side her being a vlogger. her vlogs consist of her talking about problems females have or  do challenges or reacting to old videos she has done and old accounts from when she was younger. In some of her Vlog she would mention that she has or is doing a new song . She writes her own songs and sings them. Her influences are band such a Paramore and Busted.  This is a play list of her music that she has produced and some covers that she done.

This is one of her vlog that she collaborates with the YouTuber Nerd Cubed and now does them roughly every week now with him.

The extension of various media outlets
Media outlets are a good way to promote music videos and songs to everyone but the can also be bad.  Some media outlets are YouTube, Facebook, music channels on TV, the radio, i-tune, Twitter, Spotify and many more. The media outlet do help the promotion of the music videos or songs if they are new single it is by a famous artist or band. They do have a bit of a down side as they can get over populated loads of fan made videos for that song as well and newer artist work can get pushed to the bottom if it doesn't get many views and they are having to promote themselves it can be quite hard.
The song PPAP by Pikotaro got spread round quite a few media outlets and helped him get noticed and that now that video is siting at 52, 597,748 views. Now he brings out short videos of songs that he has sung. and he has a signature look which is his animal prints suit.  The media outlet that I think the help promote it the most was Facebook as when it came out Facebook had the song every few post depending on who you like. In Japan,Tokyo sky tree for a month last year there was a cafe that had the song playing continuously and had merchandise with his animal print on and food themed around the song.

Synergistic marketing links to promotion and income
Synergistic  Marking is where companies make a licensing deal with a main company such a Walt Disney making deals to allow other firms to use Micky Mouse on products to one help the companies sell merchandise and at the same time by promoting Disney. This still continues nowadays with all the films that have come out in recent years the most popular one that is use is the film frozen.
An example of synergistic marking is the group Aqours (Aqua) again like μ's (muse) they are advertised as their characters. The group have done  a few live shows but most of their marketing has been through the singles getting sold and other merchandise being sold with the characters on them.  There is also a game on mobile run by Klab games which is a rhythm game that have both μ's and Aqours music on. The songs for the game are shortened down to about 2 minutes.  Artist also help drawing the characters and it helps promote the idols and helps show off their art and to help gain more attraction.

Why do you think music videos are so popular conclusion
Why I think music videos are so popular are because it helps the song tell a story and it gives that more of a meaning to a fan. If  an artist/band a new song the are producing or making a video for it help when there is previews/ sneak peeks into what the video may look like that will again make the fan base exited for their new release and when it comes to concerts they sometime have the music video in the background to go along with the artist/ band singing.  Music videos also help sell the artist/band and it may help them gain new fans.
I personally enjoy music videos because I don't get a songs lyrics and what they are talking about, I can watch the video listen to the music and then understand what they are singing.
